Presses

Presses are the people who publish books. You likely know the Big 5: Penguin Random House, Hachette, HarperCollins, Simon and Schuster, and MacMillan. Those massive corporate publishers are incredibly prolific and own many imprints like Riverhead and Picador that each have their own areas of interest. The presses listed below are some of our favorite independent publishers—not affiliated with any larger houses. If you ever feel like you’re struggling to find your next read, or if you just want to see what’s out there, looking at books from a single publisher can be a great way to jumpstart the process. There are bound to be similarities between titles, and you’re likely to discover a few hidden gems you wouldn’t have found otherwise. Many of these publishers also have robust internship programs that come highly recommended!
